The blockbuster deal also contained Andrew Bynum going to the Philadelphia 76ers and Andre Iguodala going to the Denver Nuggets.

The full trade sees Orlando get guard Arron Afflalo and forward Al Harrington going from the Nuggets, forward Moe Harkless and center Nikola Vucevic from Philadelphia, and forward Josh McRoberts and guard Christian Eyenga from the Lakers. Guard Chris Duhon and forward Earl Clark join Howard from the Magic to the Los Angeles. Jason Richardson also left the Magic, going to Philadelphia. Denver’s second round pick from the next two seasons is going to Orlando, (Denver will give Orlando theirs or the one they acquired from the Knicks). At the 2015 draft, the Magic get a conditional first-round pick from Philadelphia, and a second round pick from the Lakers. Finally, they can receive a conditional first rounder from Los Angeles.

Howard is expected to miss the start of the season after undergoing back surgery in April. At his introduction Friday night, Howard will get to wear his No. 12 that he wore in Orlando.

Rangers Land Dempster at Deadline

Rangers Land Dempster at Deadline:
Long believed to be heading to the Dodgers, Cubs starter Ryan Dempster was dealt to the Texas Rangers, just minutes before the 4 PM trade deadline Tuesday.

The 35-year old starter was traded for a pair of minor leaguers, third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks. His name was one of the

Thanks to his 10-5 rights, Dempster had to okay the deal because of his veto power.

His contract expires at the end of this season, and Dempster is earning $14 million.

The Rangers also acquired catcher Geovanny Soto from Chicago earlier in the week.

Dempster’s name was initially believed to be heading to the Dodgers, but LA backed out after the Cubs wouldn’t include Allen Webster. Dempster told ESPN before the deadline that he would also approve a trade to Texas or the New York Yankees.

Victorino Dealt to Dodgers

Victorino Dealt to Dodgers:
“The Flying Hawaiian” Shane Victorino is heading closer to the island.

After bringing in Hanley Ramirez, the Dodgers added the center fielder and leadoff hitter from the Philadelphia Phillies for reliever Josh Lindblom and minor league hurler Ethan Martin.

The three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glover center fielder plays the same position as current Dodgers Gold-Glove outfielder Matt Kemp. Kemp has told the Dodgers that he would move to left field if the team acquired a Victorino-caliber player. Victorino will take over the leadoff spot from the injured Dee Gordon. Gordon will move down to eighth when he returns from a torn thumb ligament.

Victorino is a free agent at the end of this season, and is earning $9.5 million in his current contract. The Dodgers drafted him in 1999, but then lost him in the Rule 5 Draft twice.

Howard To Nets Trade Possibility Dead

Howard To Nets Trade Possibility Dead:
ESPN is reporting that the Brooklyn Nets have ended their interest in acquiring Magic all-star Dwight Howard and ended talks with Orlando.

The Nets had reportedly offered four first round draft picks, center Brook Lopez, and power forward Kris Humphries in sign-and-trade deals and $3 million. That offer was rejected as the Magic weren’t interested in Humphries, but wanted to unload Quentin Richardson.

The Nets did sign Lopez, to a 4-year, $60 million max contract. THe Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers are the new front runners.

Lakers Acquire Nash In Sign-and-Trade

Lakers Acquire Nash In Sign-and-Trade:
Two-time MVP point guard Steve Nash is joining the Los Angels Lakers.

The Lakers and Suns reached a sign-and-trade deal at Nash’s request. The sign-

agreed to a three-year $27 million. In return, the Phoenix Suns get four draft picks (1st round in 2013, 2015, second rounders 2013, 2014),

Nash says he approached the Suns and asked them to get a sign-and-trade deal done with the Lakers because “because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family,” who live in the Phoenix area.

From Victoria, B.C., the Toronto Raptors were apparently in the mix, offering an identical 3-year, $27 million contract. Sign-and-trade talks were also happening with the New York Knicks.

BREAKING: Parise and Suter Sign With Wild

BREAKING: Parise and Suter Sign With Wild:
The two top free agents on this year’s NHL market have both signed with the Minnesota Wild. Both contracts last 13 years and $98 million.

Parise scored 31 goals and 69 points and played all 82 games in 2011-12, and added eight goals and 15 points in the Devils lengthly playoff run to the Cup Final. Suter scored 7 goals and 46 points with Nashville, and was selected to the All-Star Game.

This is a great day in the history of the Minnesota Wild,” said Wild GM Chuck Fletcher. “We are extremely excited to add the collective skill, experience and character of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter to an already promising roster. We view this as a rare opportunity for us to transform our franchise by adding two marquee players, who are both in the prime of their careers, at the same time.”

Ray Whitney (DAL): The 40-year old Whitney signed a 2-year deal with the Stars, and will earn $4.5 million a season. Whitney has 365 career goals and 1003 points, with seven teams. Whitney has won one Stanley Cup, in 2006 with the Hurricanes. Whitney was an NHL Second-team All-Star last season, while scoring 24 goals and 77 points and played all 82 games for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Adam Burish (SJ): The Sharks signed Burish to a four-year deal worth over $7 million. The 29-year old centre had 19 points in 65 games last season, his fifth in the NHL. This will be Burish’s third team, his previous stops were Chicago (where he won the Cup in 2010) and Dallas, where he played the last two seasons.

Matt Carkner (NYI): The Islanders locking up Carkner came as a major surprise, as the Colorado Avalanche had previously posted on their club’s Twitter account that they had agreed to terms with the 31-year old defenseman. In only 160 career games, Carkner has accumulated 361 penalty minutes, but only 18 points. Carkner’s contract runs for three years at $4.5 million total.

Alexei Ponikarovsky (WPG): A one-year, $1.8 million deal for the 33-year old Ukrainian. Ponikarovsky scored 14 goals and 33 points in 82 games split with the Hurricanes and Devils in 2011-12. Ponikarovsky played all 24 playoff games with New Jersey and scored once and added eight assists. During his long tenure as a Leaf, Ponikarovsky became a Canadian citizen, so this is somewhat of a home-coming for the left winger.

Filip Kuba (FLA): The 35-year old defenseman signed for two seasons in Florida, at $4 million a season. Originally a 1995 draft pick of the Panthers, Kuba only played his first 5 career games in South Florida before traded to Calgary. Kuba most recently played for the Ottawa Senators. The defensive defenseman racked up 32 points last season, and has never scored more than 37 in a season, over his 12-year career.

Dustin Penner (LA): Penner tested free agency but decided to stick with the team that he won the Stanley Cup with last season, with a one-year contract at $3.25 million. The 29-year old scored only 7 goals and 17 points in 65 games with the Kings, and 11 points in 20 playoff games. Penner was traded to Los Angeles at last year’s trade deadline and just finished a five-year contract worth $31.25 million.

Brandon Prust (MTL): The Canadiens inked the rugged winger to a four-year contract worth $10 million, what many considered a lot for a player who only has 63 points in five and a half NHL seasons. Prust played the last two and a half seasons on Broadway, where he scored a career-high 13 goals in 2010-11 and added 160 penalty minutes.

P.A. Parenteau (COL): Drafted 264th overall by Anaheim in 2001, Parenteau was a late bloomer, not emerging until he scored 20 goals two seasons ago with the New York Islanders. The 29-year old signed a four-year contract with the Avalanche worth $16 million. He tallied 18 goals and 67 points last season on Long Island.

Jason Garrison (VAN): The undrafted defenseman emerged as an offensive defenseman this season with Florida, and is now going from the southeast to the northwest, as he signed a six year, $27.6 million contract with the Canucks. His 16 goals last season set a record last season for most goals by a Panthers d-man. A native of White Rock, BC, Garrison became the odd man out after Florida inked Kuba to his contract.

Martin Brodeur (NJ): Rumors were swirling as to wher Brodeur was off to, but in the end he decided to stay with the only team he’s ever known. The all-time leader in wins and shutouts signed a two-year contract worth $9 million and a no-trade clause. Brodeur has won three Stanley Cups with the Devils, and played all of his 1191 games with them. Brodeur played 59 games this season, with 31 wins, and went 14-9 in the playoffs.

Jiri Hudler (CGY): The 28-year old Czech signed a four-year deal worth $16 million. Hudler played all of his previous NHL games for the Detroit Red Wings. Hudler tallied 87 goals and 214 points in 409 games in the Motor City, including 25 goals and 50 points last season. Hudler left North America for the 2009-10 season and played for Dynamo Moscow.

Olli Jokinen (WPG): Selected third overall in 1997, Jokinen has bounced around in recent seasons, and after signing a two-year deal that sees him make $9 million, Winnipeg is his next stop. The 33-year old Finn has only played in 6 playoff games (Calgary, 2009) during his 13 year career. Jokinen scored 23 goals and 61 points last season with the Flames.

Jaromir Jagr (DAL): At least one more year for the 40-year old Jagr, who signed a one-season deal worth $4.5 million. Jagr has two Stanley Cup rings, as well as a Hart Trophy, 5 Art Ross Trophies, and 665 career goals and 1653 points. Jagr made a North American comeback last year with Philadelphia, where he scored 19 goals and 54 points in 73 games.

P.A.
The two met in Los Angeles, where Hennigan gave Howard no guarantees as to whether he will get his wish. This is not the first time Howard has wanted to be traded to the Nets in his ongoing soap opera which started when he signed his opt-in clause for one more year on March 15.

Oilers Agree With Justin Schultz

Oilers Agree With Justin Schultz:
Top prospect Justin Schultz has agreed to an entry-level deal with the Edmonton Oilers and have won the sweepstakes for the highly-touted 21-year old.

After leaving school in March, Schultz did not sign with the Anaheim Ducks, who drafted him in the second round in 2008, making him a UFA. Schultz can’t sign his deal until Sunday, however.

Schultz had 16 goals and 44 points in his final year at Wisconsin and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. At least 20 NHL teams expressed interest in Schultz, and the Oilers recruited Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey to lure Schultz to Alberta.

“You look at the team they have right now — all those young guys are turning into superstars,” Schultz said. “They got a good, solid young core of prospects. That’s definitely intriguing to me.”

“It’s confirmation, I think, that good things are happening,” Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said. “This is a young player that found himself in a position where he could make whatever choice he wanted.

Daily Sports Report: June 29, 2012

After shutting out the Dodgers in all three games, and the blanking the Reds on Thursday, could the Giants keep Cincinnati off the board again?
